The Associated Gospel Assemblies (AGA) is an indigenous Jamaican church grouping that started in the early 1920s. Three fairly distinct periods can be identified in the denominations history. The Formation period (1922-1946) takes in the Stanley Harris era (1925-46) and the early-formation period which preceded, and features the Karram family. The Expansion period (1946-1979) is marked by engagement in missionary endeavour sustained at a previously unknown level within the group. The Consolidation period (1980-1994) saw a slowing of missionary exploits. A fourth period, which began under the nine-year presidential tenure of Rev. Peter G. Garth, is now directed by Dr. the Rev. Carlton A. Dennis and is still being defined.
Portmore Gospel Assembly (PGA) began as a denominational effort spearheaded by Pastors Henry White, Curtis Cole, and Albert Karram. The AGA sought a place of ministry in what has become the largest and fastest growing residential community in the Caribbean. An entire block of fourteen lots was purchased from the developer. A sanctuary was erected, and worship begun in May 1978.
Pastor Henry White guided the new congregation in the beginning, until Pastor Odel Clifton Peart assumed the role in 1980. He served faithfully for nine years. After Pastor Peart's decease in 1989, Leslie Hamilton and Roy Johnson, both ordained as elders in 1990, carried the mantle of leadership while seeking a pastor. The church called Donovan D. Cole who began serving in January of 1994 while still in an administrative position at the Jamaica Theological Seminary. He became full time pastor in September 1994.
Pastor Donovan D. Cole kept the lantern burning bright and took PGA to higher heights of spirituality and deeper depths of theology. He served well along with with his much loved family of six (6), leading the fellowship into increased community-based as well as national support. He rose the bar of our music and singing ministry and while here produced his Warfare album, concert and drama production. Under the expert tutelage of Pastor Cole, other Pastor such as Rev. Shane O'Connor and Rev. Owen Desgouttes were groomed and graduated, before the mantle was passed on to yet another giant of the Faith... Dr. Carlton A. Dennis.
Pastor Dennis served as the interim Pastor, continuing with the solid nutrition of the Word and the growth of the fellowship, both numerically and spiritually. As the President of the Associated Gospel Assemblies he was able to continually build up the leadership and shape the vision of the church into one for the future.
In the year 2007, the church appointed a chief shepherd for the present, our Pastor for the future, Rev. Conrad Reid. He came to us with his own tribe of four (4) lovely ladies. Well beyond his first hundred days at the helm we are on fire, well oiled, streamlined, fully armed and charging into the 21st century, going into all the world and spreading the Gospel message wherever men be found.
The history continues to be written...
