1 Corinthians 11:28 (Amplified Bible)
28Let a man [thoroughly] examine himself, and [only when he has done] so should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
We are all instructed in 1 Corinthians 11:28 to examine ourselves. Though this passage specifically speaks to a sacred moment (breaking of bread), I believe we are expected to practice self-examination on a daily basis. It therefore cannot be only when we sit at the Lord’s Table.
The best and most recommended tool to use to evaluate our thoughts, actions, and our behaviours is of course the Word of God. 1Thessalonians 4:1-12 gives us an excellent guide as to what God’s will is for us about how we should live.
Might I suggest that we open ourselves to being examined by the Holy Spirit through His word and also through those we know love us. Let us be willing to be true to the faults we have and purpose to depend on the Holy Spirit to help us be rid of them.
The truth is friends; I believe the Lord will work on us once we give the control to Him. On the other hand if we are comfortable with our state then we will undoubtedly remain as such.
So pause for a moment. Ask yourself a couple of questions. Do I represent God in the way I treat my spouse, children, parents, coworkers, friends, and strangers? Am I fulfilling the purpose for which I was created? Am I self-controlled? Do I think pure thoughts?
Application
- Do you examine yourself?
- Do you allow the Holy Spirit to convict you and bring about change?
- Are you open and honest with yourself about the faults you have?
Let Us Pray
Abba, Search me, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”
